The PPL Skywalk project is a 135’ long pedestrian elevated walkway born from the need to provide safe and comfortable passage from the third level of the parking garage to the second floor of the existing PPL North Building in downtown Allentown.

The project consisted of new 20’ tall concrete piers constructed in the existing loading dock truck area, supporting three 45’ long open design trusses. The exterior of the walkway is comprised of an aluminum curtainwall system with tinted glass and spandrel panels, an EIFS closure at the bottom along with a curved standing seam metal roof which mimics the nearby Plaza building.

Interior finishes included spiral HVAC ductwork, painted sprinkler pipe and wall mounted light fixtures which complimented the open concept of the walkway.

Multiple street closings, relocations of overhead power lines, freezing rain and snow combined with not disrupting the owner’s ongoing operations were some of the major challenges of this project.

Testimonial

This project posed numerous challenges to the entire project team. We were working on a very tight job site with minimal space for material staging and contractor equipment. Access around and thru the work areas had to be maintained at all times for the approximately 1,800 PPL employees who work in the complex. And, it goes almost without saying that earlier renovations of the 74 year old building had not been adequately documented, so uncovering unexpected conditions and dealing with them was an ongoing challenge of everyone.
